A CALENDAR OF NATURE EVENTS!
A CALENDAR OF NATURE EVENTS
By Andrea Lopez
The true symbol of summer is the celestial body that astronomers call "The Sun." This time of the year is dominated by the overwhelming and omnipresent light of the Sun.
On June 21, we celebrate the Summer solstice, and although some parts of the country will remain cold, the sun's undeniable rays will slowly pierce through with more intensity, illuminating all creatures great and small!
Our sun is the life giver and the force that keeps nature and us alive! June, above all, is the month of flowering plants and when the fields are dressed in green.
Tadpoles swim in shallow ponds, and Oriole nests are at the ends of the Elm branches.
The Tiger swallowtail butterflies fill the air, and fireflies appear.
The door is open for our June bugs to shine. Caterpillars, earthworms, potato bugs, ants, and creepy crawlies tread around our children's playgrounds, capturing their eyes of imagination and opening a whole scope of wonder and discovery.
Our local beach is in full operation for all our children to enjoy the coolness of Lake Ontario and its sandy beaches full of seashells and sea glass through the summer months.
Monarch butterflies appear in their splendor, and early morning spider webs trap insects, children love to observe and learn about life cycles and death.
The asters bloom, and chicories can be seen along roadsides, especially when hopping onto the QEW, via Toronto or Niagara.
The Chicory flower is an edible summer flower that can be used to garnish salads and as a decorative touch for cakes and other baked goods. Backyard insects join the night chorus, and dragonflies shine their magical and ancient (300 million years) light colorfully displayed in million patterns, making them a delight to observe.
During the late summer, Nighthawks pass the Niagara escarpment, and the first wave of fall warbler migration begins.
Watch the full moon in the first week of September and see the passing of bird migrants leaving our land for better opportunities for survival.
The summer ends, and so is the trip to Mexico already overbooked by the Monarch butterfly migration.
Apples ripen, goldenrods and asters say goodbye to bloom again next year!
Fall will soon be here!
And in the minds and hearts of Terra Viva children, is kept the eternal memories of another childhood summer time.
The memories of endless nature playful moments and experiences of an unforgettable summer season.
Summer is made of successive moments of warmth, friendship, natural flow, and authentic living!
Don't let another summer season pass you by...
Let's be present with our children and soak up the goodness of the sun!
